How to Start an Adult Day Center

On September 17, ElderHealth Northwests South King County Adult Day Health Center moved to Kent, after over 10 years on the Valley Medical Center campus in Renton. The spacious, newly-remodeled building at 7829 S 180th Street (near IKEA) is almost a third bigger than the previous location and has a well-designed layout, including space devoted to participants with memory loss, an office for the nurses, and spaces for occupational therapy equipment and art supplies. There is so much we can do here that we couldnt do at our old site, Site Manager Patti Dahlman says, surveying one of the largest rooms. Fiddlers and other entertainers perform for us regularly, and theyll finally be able to play for everyone all at once! On any given day, over 100 participants come to the adult day health center. The morning group is comprised mainly of frail elders; the afternoon session is for developmentally-disabled adults. The two programs strive to meet the needs of an underserved South King County population and both have grown dramatically over the last few years. The centers growth has created an increased need for volunteers for both the morning and afternoon programs. The Kent location is also open on weekends, which provides volunteer opportunities for high school students needing community service hours, college students in services learning classes, and people who are at their jobs during the traditional work week.

Just before United Ways Day of Caring, decorations started popping up all over and everyone seemed to be talking about the annual event. The big day came, and numerous organizations provided volunteers at our adult day health centers. The First Hill and North Seattle centers continued the tradition of hosting casino events, complete with sequins, dice, and the infamous life-size Elvis cut-out. A sock hop at our South Seattle location inspired many participants to dress to the nines! Our South King and Snohomish County sites developed a Hawaiian theme, complete with floral shirts and games ranging from Island Hopping to coconut bowling. No animals were sacrificed during Spear the Pig, which employed a Styrofoam swine and feathered kabob sticks.
In addition to loads of fun, the Day of Caring provided community members a chance to come out and experience the joy of our day health programs for themselves. Thank you to the United Way of King County, United Way of Snohomish County, and volunteers from Microsoft, UPS, Washington Mutual, and the accounting firm Hascal Sjoholm and Company, all of whom helped to make the day fun for our clients by dressing up according to the theme and getting into the spirit for our parties.

Legacy of Love: Second Annual African American Caregiver Conference Saturday, October 13, 2007, 9:00am 2:00pm New Holly Gathering Hall
7054 32nd Ave S, Seattle
FREE: Registration information below African Americans are at greater risk for developing Alzheimers disease than the general population. The Second Annual African American Caregiver Forum, Continuing the Legacy of Love, will highlight the unique concerns of African Americans impacted by Alzheimers disease. Two hundred people are expected to attend this day-long event. Dr. Lauren Bonner Lee, Alzheimers researcher and clinician, will be featured as the keynote speaker.
