Nancy Buchanan, 1931 - 2004
Nancy Buchanan, a long-time supporter of ElderHealth Northwest and a community leader, passed away on September 21, 2004.

Nancy got to know ElderHealth when she volunteered to serve lunch at one of our first adult day centers over 20 years ago. Since that time, she was an active member of the ElderHealth Board of Directors. In 2003, ElderHealth named Buchanan Place, its first supported living home, in celebration of Nancy’s quiet and effective advocacy on behalf of frail elders, people of color and people with low incomes.

Nancy also worked for many years with King County Councilmember Larry Gossett and was an active member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Seattle, where she sang in the women’s choir.

In honor of Nancy’s many contributions to the Seattle community, Mayor Greg Nickels declared September 24 as Nancy Buchanan Day.

Conference Explores Gerontechnology Today and Tomorrow
Gerontechnology Today and Tomorrow:
A Conference and Exhibition of Technologies to Aid Elders at Home and Elder Caregivers
Saturday, October 30, 2004, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Swedish Medical Center – Glaser Auditorium
747 Broadway, Seattle

A sensor bracelet that monitors blood pressure. A personal digital assistant that vocalizes medication reminders. Monitoring devices that help prevent a cognitively-impaired person from wandering away from home.

These are the kinds of innovations explored in “Gerontechnology Today and Tomorrow,” a one-day seminar that examines the relationship between technology and aging in place.

Current products will be demonstrated, and conference faculty will spotlight research and development activities of Northwest companies (e.g., Microsoft, Intel Labs), regional hospitals and universities.

Sponsorship is provided by Swedish Home Care Services, University of Washington (Institute on Aging, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, de Tournay Center for Healthy Aging), and ElderHealth Northwest.

The conference is designed for professionals working with frail, older adults and their families. To register or obtain more information, click the link below or call (206) 543-8727.

Founding Residents Put Finishing Touches to Gaffney House
ElderHealth recently celebrated the arrival of its first three founding residents at Gaffney House, located on Seattle's Capitol Hill.

The move-in of these residents is bringing life not only to the house, but also to ElderHealth’s vision of creating small homes offering personalized services to people with moderate to advanced dementia and other significant physical and cognitive conditions.

Gaffney House residents, along with staff, are filling the house with the sights, sounds and smells of home. In addition to enjoying this fall’s sunny afternoons on the verandah, residents spent an afternoon baking oatmeal cookies and several evenings playing some rather raucous card games with staff. We’ve also made several field trips to Madison Market and Trader Joe’s for morning coffee and groceries for dinner.

To find out more about Gaffney House, please call Steve Emmer at (206) 838-1930.

Volunteers Demonstrate United Way Spirit on "Day of Caring"
The United Way Day of Caring on Friday September 17th was a great success at ElderHealth Northwest’s adult day health centers. Our thanks go out to the employees from Microsoft, RoseWater Engineering, Physicians Insurance, Costco and Regence Blue Shield who gave their time to help us put on our Country Fair, Casino and Western Days.

Volunteers from Rosewater Engineering arrived “dressed to deal” at our downtown Seattle adult day health center (pictured). In addition to serving up casino games and refreshments, the group brought prizes collected at their office. Thanks to these volunteers, every participant walked away with a special remembrance of the day.

Callers Respond to Northwest Caregiving Town Hall Meeting
On July 19, 2004, members of the National Governors Association joined professional and family caregivers and influential experts in a dialogue on an issue that affects nearly one in every four households: caregiving.

KCTS broadcast the Northwest Caregiving Town Hall Meeting on September 9 to an estimated 22,000 viewers in the Seattle area, and Senior Information and Assistance (1-888-435-3377) fielded dozens of calls from caregivers and care recipients seeking resources.

"It's been several weeks since the program aired, and we are still receiving calls from viewers responding to the broadcast," says Eileen Murphy, Associate Director of Senior Information and Assistance.

The Town Hall Meeting was rebroadcast on September 12, and was produced in partnership with Wiland-Bell Productions, KCTS Television, ElderHealth Northwest, PacifiCare Health Systems and dozens of area agencies serving older and disabled adults.
