Quick Brown Fox: An Alzheimer's Story
Film * Information Panel * Refreshments * Free
Thursday, November 16, 2006
7:00pm - 8:30pm (doors open 6:30pm)
South Seattle Adult Day Health Center, 4712 35th Ave S
RSVP by November 13: (206) 224-3757
Made by local filmmaker Ann Hedreen, "Quick Brown Fox" is a documentary that examines the emotional costs, causes and potential cures of the disease that afflicted Hedreen’s mother. It combines a moving family journey with an insightful look into the science and politics of Alzheimer’s, which now affects more than 18 million people worldwide.
Interweaving Super-8 home movies, 1950s medical film footage and heartbreaking interviews with her family, the film confronts the disease that claimed the mind of her once-beautiful and brainy mother, and raises profound questions about just how important our memories are.
Seattle Times columnist Liz Taylor says the film is “intelligently and articulately put together, with irony and laughter and love.”
The film will be followed by a discussion panel with Ann Hedreen and representatives of the King County Dementia Partnership project, whose members include Senior Services, ElderHealth Northwest, Alzheimer’s Association, Evergreen Healthcare’s Geriatric Regional Assessment Team, Kin On Community Healthcare, and Seattle/King County Aging and Disability Services.
Attendees will learn about a range of free services for people with memory problems and their family caregivers (or loved ones).
Refreshments will be served, and the event is free and open to the community. Respite care is available. Please RSVP by Monday, November 13: (206) 224-3757.

ElderFriends, a volunteer companionship program sponsored by ElderHealth Northwest, is especially active this fall. A fall fireside dinner at West Seattle’s Camp Long brought together elders and companion volunteers for a savory dinner, good conversation and unique entertainment by folklorist Maggie Bennett. We thank Maggie and the many donors who provided food and supplies: Metropolitan Market, Starbucks, Thriftway, and Tall Grass Bakery.
As one of its annual traditions, ElderFriends will again be delivering hot meals on Thanksgiving Day. Friendly visitors will bring delicious meals (courtesy of the Millionair Club) to 50 isolated elders. If you would like to volunteer to deliver a meal, please contact us at elderfriends@elderhealth.org or (206) 224-3790.
Finally, this fall marked the launch of ElderFriends’ new website, complete with a web-based volunteer application and a form to refer an elder to the program.
