Dementia Partnership Presents Acclaimed Alzheimer’s Documentary
Quick Brown Fox: An Alzheimer's Story
Film * Information Panel * Refreshments * Free
Thursday, November 16, 2006
7:00pm - 8:30pm (doors open 6:30pm)
South Seattle Adult Day Health Center, 4712 35th Ave S
RSVP by November 13: (206) 224-3757

Made by local filmmaker Ann Hedreen, "Quick Brown Fox" is a documentary that examines the emotional costs, causes and potential cures of the disease that afflicted Hedreen’s mother. It combines a moving family journey with an insightful look into the science and politics of Alzheimer’s, which now affects more than 18 million people worldwide.

Interweaving Super-8 home movies, 1950s medical film footage and heartbreaking interviews with her family, the film confronts the disease that claimed the mind of her once-beautiful and brainy mother, and raises profound questions about just how important our memories are.

Seattle Times columnist Liz Taylor says the film is “intelligently and articulately put together, with irony and laughter and love.”

The film will be followed by a discussion panel with Ann Hedreen and representatives of the King County Dementia Partnership project, whose members include Senior Services, ElderHealth Northwest, Alzheimer’s Association, Evergreen Healthcare’s Geriatric Regional Assessment Team, Kin On Community Healthcare, and Seattle/King County Aging and Disability Services.

Attendees will learn about a range of free services for people with memory problems and their family caregivers (or loved ones).

Refreshments will be served, and the event is free and open to the community. Respite care is available. Please RSVP by Monday, November 13: (206) 224-3757.

ElderHealth Northwest welcomes VIPs on Day of Caring
United Way Day of Caring is a much-anticipated annual event at ElderHealth Northwest. In the week leading up to the big day, long-time clients can be heard telling newcomers tales of jugglers, Elvis impersonators and dance parties of the past. Casino Day is a long- standing event at our Ravenna and downtown Seattle adult day health centers and clients eagerly anticipate the glitz and glam associated with these events. The Country Fair is always a big hit at our South Seattle location and theme parties such as this year’s Pirate Day is worth its weight in gold at our Renton location.

For a little added excitement this year United Way of King County President and CEO John Fine visited our Casino Day party and mingled with the crowd at our downtown Seattle location as Microsoft volunteers and ElderHealth participants played poker, blackjack, and roulette. At the same site, Microsoft Business President Jeff Raikes and his family joined participants in physical exercises.

One of the most important things that makes Day of Caring successful is the presence of caring volunteers from local companies. This year volunteers from Microsoft, Hertz Corporation and Physician’s Insurance brought their energy and enthusiasm to the job at our Seattle and Renton adult day health centers. Often these encounters turn into ongoing relationships. Physician’s Insurance employees helped with the Country Fair for the second time this year. And a Microsoft group that worked at the South Seattle location in 2005 went on to volunteer at our Christmas party and to conduct a donation drive for sweat pants over the summer. We greatly appreciate volunteer groups and value our ongoing connections with the caring employees at these local companies.

ElderFriends Program Enjoys a Busy Fall
ElderFriends, a volunteer companionship program sponsored by ElderHealth Northwest, is especially active this fall. A fall fireside dinner at West Seattle’s Camp Long brought together elders and companion volunteers for a savory dinner, good conversation and unique entertainment by folklorist Maggie Bennett. We thank Maggie and the many donors who provided food and supplies: Metropolitan Market, Starbucks, Thriftway, and Tall Grass Bakery.

As one of its annual traditions, ElderFriends will again be delivering hot meals on Thanksgiving Day. Friendly visitors will bring delicious meals (courtesy of the Millionair Club) to 50 isolated elders. If you would like to volunteer to deliver a meal, please contact us at elderfriends@elderhealth.org or (206) 224-3790.

Finally, this fall marked the launch of ElderFriends’ new website, complete with a web-based volunteer application and a form to refer an elder to the program.

Workplace Giving Campaigns in Full Swing
This fall, many workplaces are holding charitable fund drives. When thinking about your contributions, please consider donating to ElderHealth Northwest.

For 30 years ElderHealth has helped frail and disabled adults avoid premature or unnecessary placement in an institutional setting. ElderHealth’s adult day health centers, supported living homes, in-home and volunteer companionship services have a significant impact on the lives of over 1,100 individuals every year.

Donations can be made through campaigns such as the United Ways of King and Snohomish Counties, Combined Federal Campaign, King County Employee Giving Program, and Washington State Combined Fund Drive. Your workplace fund drive allows you to make donations through payroll deduction, which is an easy way to support ElderHealth Northwest throughout the year.

Confidentiality Training for Eldercare Professionals
For Your Eyes Only: Putting HIPAA & Confidentiality Into Practice
Tuesday, December 12, 2006: 9:00 am – 11:00 am
SAFECO Jackson Street Center
306 23rd Avenue S., Seattle, WA 98144
Pre-registration required

Eldercare professionals are called upon to handle sensitive and intimate information about the people in their care. This workshop will cover how to legally and ethically share confidential information with family members, physicians and other health and social service coworkers. We’ll also talk about situations in which the client/patient is unable to give permission to share information.

The workshop is presented by David Girard, an attorney in private practice in Seattle. For over 18 years he was an attorney for Columbia (formerly Evergreen) Legal Services. In his current practice he represents both individuals and health-care providers faced with privacy and confidentiality issues.

This educational offering from the Washington Adult Day Services Association is approved by the Professional Guardian Board and meets many facility and professional licensing & certification board requirements.
