Small groups of people living together, directing their daily lives with support, is not a new concept. It has been successful in a wide range of applications including group homes for adults with disabilities, adult family homes and congregate settings, and mental health initiatives. From older adults and their families to aging experts to policy makers, there is a growing interest in applying the small house concept to the field of aging, and the care of older adults.
With the support of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Pioneer Network’s Creating Home: Small House Webinar series explores topics around the development, implementation and sustainability of both attached and detached smaller environments and small houses for older adults. Participants are invited and encouraged to continue the dialogue on Pioneer Network’s new Small House online forum, House to Home: Pioneering Conversations on Small Houses, to be introduced following the conclusion of the series.
The webinar series is facilitated by Nora Gibson, Executive Director, ElderHealth Northwest. The one-hour sessions are scheduled for March 5, 12 and 19 at 10:00am PST. The price for the full series is $110 per computer, or two sessions for $90 or one for $59. Space is limited, but the sessions are open to any number of participants who are in one location, and could be projected as a dynamic and interactive seminar series – making this a very affordable and high quality educational opportunity for groups of any size.
The series dates are:
March 5 - The Essential Elements of Small Houses
March 12 – Lessons Learned from Small House Models
March 19 – Policy, Regulatory and Reimbursement Issues

Alzheimer’s Education Conference: Supporting the Resilient Mind
Friday, April 24, 2009 (pre-conference April 23)
Washington State Convention Center
Pre-registration required
When something goes wrong, how do you respond? Do you tend to bounce back, deny the situation, or fall apart? How resilient are you? Resilience refers to the ability to adjust to change, adversity, trauma, or tragedy. Being resilient will not make diseases or tragedies go away, but it can help you to rediscover enjoyment and to manage future stressors. Current research is exploring ways to build or boost the brain’s ability to be resilient to disease or trauma. At the 24th Annual Alzheimer’s Regional Conference, we will explore ways to support resilience in the brain, in people experiencing dementia, and in their caregivers.
This year’s agenda was designed with multiple learning tracks: leadership, direct care, advocacy, advanced practice, care management, family caregiver, and a general audience track. Workshops are innovative, evidence-based, and focus on building practical skills. Conference participants will leave with a variety of resources and tools that will help to support the resilient mind.
