A cool morning with skies teasing sun and threatening rain didn’t deter two fearless groups of volunteers at ElderHealth Northwest’s Downtown and North Seattle adult day health centers. Seattle Works Day, Saturday May 21, mobilized 1400 young adult volunteers to complete 50 projects in the Seattle area. ElderHealth Northwest gratefully hosted two of these groups.
The volunteers planted a multitude of spring flowers, bulbs, and perennials to beautify our entryways. They also prepared accessible gardens, which will allow our clients to take care of container and vertically-oriented plantings. At our Downtown Seattle location, 11 volunteers applied a fresh coat of paint to an office, hallway, coat closet, bookshelf and benches. They also deep cleaned wheelchairs, weights and other occupational therapy equipment. Seven hard working volunteers at the North Seattle center installed parking signs and a new door chime system, painted a coat rack and washed chairs and wheelchairs.
“Our volunteers were so motivated and knowledgeable, they made everything a breeze!” said Katie Lutrell, intern and one of the project’s coordinators.
North Seattle Site Manager Joanne McMahon says, “We couldn’t have completed this project without the volunteers; it would take us weeks to do the work they accomplished in under four hours. We really appreciate them!”
We offer a big thanks to Seattle Works and the volunteers who contributed 70 hours of service!

DEMYSTIFYING GUARDIANSHIP SERVICES
Wednesday, June 22, 2005, 1:00 pm – 4:00pm
SAFECO Jackson Street Center
306 23rd Avenue S., Seattle
Preregistration required
Sometimes when a person is not able to manage his/her finances or make healthcare and other decisions, a guardian may be appointed to assist in tending to the individual’s affairs. But how and under what circumstances is a guardian assigned? What are the scopes and limits of the guardian’s power and responsibilities? This workshop is designed to remove the confusion about and mystery from guardianship services.
Lynne Fulp, MBA, CPG, is the Executive Director of Partners in Care, a guardianship and care management agency. She’ll help workshop participants become familiar with the different types of guardianship, the process for getting a guardian, and how guardians work with clients and make decisions.
Washington Adult Day Services Association (WADSA) presents this seminar as one in a continuing series of training and education courses to support caregivers, both family and professional. Discounts are offered to WADSA members and to members of affiliated organizations.
