Thanksgiving Brings Together Volunteers & Isolated Elders
"That was real nice to get that delivery and know somebody cares about other human beings, thank you very much. . . . A family came to visit and talk for an hour, they were real nice people.”
—A heartfelt response from an ElderFriend who wasn't home alone after all on Thanksgiving Day.

On Thanksgiving morning elders throughout King County were served a quality dinner by warm and caring ElderFriends volunteers! Over 60 volunteers—from toddlers to octogenarians—gathered at the Yankee Grill and Roaster in Ballard to participate in ElderFriends’ 9th annual Thanksgiving Meal Delivery program. Because of these volunteers, 50 isolated elders enjoyed a friendly visit and a delicious hot meal for the holiday!

We are grateful to the businesses who donated the delivery items: Yankee Grill & Roaster in Ballard provided full-course turkey dinners and hosted the event, Odwalla donated 100 bottles of fresh-squeezed juices, Ballard Blossom contributed beautiful, individually wrapped roses and Whole Foods Market (Roosevelt) offered delicious fresh pies. First graders from the Bertschi School created colorful placemats to round out the delivery.

We couldn't reach out to these lonely elders without our fantastic volunteers! To learn more about ElderFriends’ “Adopt-a-Grandparent” program visit http://www.elderfriends.org or contact Ginger at (206) 224-3790.

All Gifts Make a Difference at ElderHealth
"This year, as last year, my father has asked us to donate to ElderHealth Northwest rather than buying him a Christmas present. ElderHealth has been a life and sanity-saver in helping to care for my disabled mother. We appreciate you more than words can say. Thank you."
– Angela

The holidays are a festive time at ElderHealth Northwest! Donors from local congregations and businesses provide gifts for each of our participants, many of whom would not receive a gift otherwise. These generous community members also provide much needed items for our activity programs.

Each year the Seattle Times publishes the Nonprofit Wish List (link below). Additional wishes for our adult day centers and supported living homes include a wheelchair scale, art supplies, and gift cards.

To share in the joy of the holiday season at ElderHealth Northwest contact Ginger Seybold at (206) 224-3790 or gingers@elderhealth.org.

If you wish to make an on-line donation, follow the Network for Good link (at right).

Workshop: Dementia in People with Developmental Disabilities
Thursday, December 15, 2005
SAFECO Jackson Street Center
306 23rd Avenue S., Seattle

Much like the general population, people with developmental disabilities are living longer, healthier lives. Consequently, they are also at increased risk of developing dementia. This informative workshop will explore the interplay of developmental disability and Alzheimer’s-type dementia, including:

• The signs and progression of dementia in people with developmental disabilities
• Practical communication and behavior approaches

The seminar is presented by Sue Schepp, a registered nurse and the Education Director for the Alzheimer’s Association of Western and Central Washington.

This educational offering from the Washington Adult Day Services Association is approved by the Certified Professional Guardian Board for continuing education credits, and it meets the requirements of many licensing and certification boards and facility licenses.
